How to Purchase
Montebello & Surrounding Cities
Would you like to learn how to draw & paint in Oil? If you are painting now, would you like to find out how to take your art to the next level?
When and where will these classes take place and how do you join.

Right now I am seeking people in the Montebello area and neighboring cities who wish to learn and/or improve their art. Before I secure a location to hold these classes, I need a minimum of 8 to 10 people who want to participate. I will not have a class larger than 15 people to begin with. I would like to start with those who can attend a class one day a week during the early day. A definite day and time will be picked between Monday and Friday. I will pick a day that is best for the majority of those interested. The classes will last two hours. The price will only be $10 a lesson.

I understand that this schedule may not work for everyone. If you are interested but need a night class or a weekend class, please let me know. It may be arranged if there are enough who wish to attend.

If you are interested let me know by going to my contact page and e-mailing me. Tell me what times and days you will be able to take a class. I will use this information to select a day and time. I will e-mail everyone back.

At this time I will not be teaching children. If you have a child who you would like to study art, do write me and let me know. If there is enough interest I may in the future offer a children’s class.

The class I am offering at this time will be good for those who are free during the day. Those who are home workers, retired or work at night are examples. Remember, if you would like to study with me, but what I am offering at this time isn’t good for your schedule, do let me know. I may create a class that will work for you.

Anyone wanting private lessons, e-mail me.

Thank you,
Dan Johnson
I recently moved to Montebello and I'm offering “Group Art Instruction Classes".  If you have ever wanted to learn how to draw and paint, or if you are painting now and would like to see if you can take your art to another level, you may want to consider taking the classes I am presenting.

My profession has not been teaching art, it has been creating it. Some of what I have painted you can see in this On-Line Gallery. This will allow you to decide if you think I have skill and knowledge that you would like to develop. This is art, not math. We are dealing with seeing as an artist, and developing that skill so you can make the proper decisions that will lead you to creating your own artistic vision. How can someone teach you something that they can’t do very well. During my several decades of painting I have given advice to many aspiring artists, and taught a few classes. I enjoy and am excited about helping those with a true interest in developing their artist skill and vision. My method of teaching is unique. I care deeply about what I do, and you will be given all the attention I can provide. If you are serious about gaining artistic skills, it may be to your benefit to sign up. You will never know, if you don’t try. Other subjects I will talk about is motivation, the endless quest to find subject matter, and even selling your art.

Why would you want to take Art Instruction from me?

  • Painted professionally for over 25 years.
  • Have a great desire to pass on knowledge acquired.
  • Can communicate clearly and simply.
  • Believe deeply that I can help you understand elements of painting that will advance your skill.
  • You can judge my ability by looking at the art in this gallery.

Here is a brief summary of how I view teaching art.

I believe “Each Artist” is an individual with skills, vision, desires, and motivation that is unique only to them. My goal is to help you learn how to understand the many necessary skills and techniques that will let you paint what you want, how you want. I will not teach you one particular technique on how to approach all your paintings. All techniques and methods have validity, but a particular one is not for every artist. I have seen teaching methods that advocate painting using the same procedure for every painting. This may be helpful to simplify the painting process, but it limits expanding your art to new vistas. I will teach you how to use your tools, how to mix beautiful color, and how to understand color. We will explore different approaches towards the creation of a painting. For those just beginning, I will teach a common simple way to begin. Of vast importance, I will teach you how to see as only an artist can see. When you have trained your “Artistic Eye” properly, you will begin being your own self-teacher. This one facet alone will take you to places in art that you never imagined.

You will be encouraged to create in a way that is enjoyable and meaningful to you. I’m not looking to make you a clone of how I paint. If you have a vision, I will want you to keep it as you see it. Vision can be fragile. A negative comment towards someones ideas may cause doubt. I believe this is wrong. You should always follow your path.

Some of the information that will be presented will include; composition, color, what brushes to use, when is your painting done, how to simplify, what is perspective, what colors do in the distance, when to stop painting and let it dry before doing more, and how to recognize muddy color.

Learn this, and you can become a master at painting. To break the rules you should know them first. Art is what you want it to be. With some proper guidance you can gain needed skills so much sooner than if you don’t acquire it. There are many rewarding and fun experiences we can all have.
My method of teaching will include lecture, demonstration, and then we will all paint. I will be there to answer questions you may have, and help you with problems you may encounter. My teaching is all about you. I am doing this to truly help you as best as I can.
